Santorini, Greece

"Where the Aegean Meets the Sky."

Best: April – June & September – October
Plan My Santorini, Greece Trip

Santorini doesn't look real from a distance — whitewashed villages spilling down volcanic cliffs into an impossibly blue sea — and somehow it looks even better up close.

Santorini was born from catastrophe. Thousands of years ago, a volcanic eruption shattered the island and carved out the dramatic caldera that now defines its coastline — a crescent of cliffs rising 1,000 feet above the sea, crowned with the whitewashed, blue-domed villages the island is famous for. Fira and Oia cling to these cliffs like something out of a dream, their narrow stone streets winding past boutique hotels, cliffside pools, and churches that seem built specifically for photographs. But Santorini is more than its postcard image. Inland, the island's volcanic soil produces some of Greece's most distinctive wines, grown low to the ground in coiled vines to withstand the Aegean winds. Black-sand beaches replace the white ones found elsewhere in Greece, a quiet reminder of the island's fiery origins. And every evening, without fail, the entire island seems to pause for the same ritual — gathering along the caldera's edge to watch the sun sink into the sea, painting the sky in shades that feel almost unfair for one place to have.
"Santorini doesn't have a sunset — it has an event the whole island shows up for, every single evening."
